Softening
When I had to tell my team that I was going home and not entering Gaza, I could barely speak. A bubble of fear and shame lodged itself in my throat. The Softening project and the research that followed—"Chronicle of Abandonment: The Emotional and Social Process of Battlefield Desertion"—are an attempt to burst the silence bubble I felt then and finally tell my own war story.
The Softening project is an effort to give voice to the silence imposed by the anguish of shame, an attempt to tell my story through the figure of the IDF spokesperson, Daniel Hagari. Since the outbreak of the war, Hagari, present in his statements as an empty marionette delivering the official IDF messaging, has become a public figure in Israeli society. The dubbing act I perform in the video continues this use of his character as a hollow spokesperson, through which my personal story is reflected. Moreover, this action allows me to soften his laconic statements and, through the element of voice, create a personal, raw, and honest declaration—one that gives expression to my own voice.
Additionally, the aspect of suppression and the feeling of ‘muteness’ that I experienced are expressed in another video, which follows the sign language interpreter’s window during his statements. In it, I present the three different ways the word fear is represented in Israeli Sign Language.
In military terminology, the word softening refers to the massive bombing of an area to ease the advancement of forces toward their next objective. Thus, softening takes on a dual meaning, contrasting with its original sense—the act of making something softer. This duality creates an inherent conflict within the word, embodying two opposing interpretations. The video work is projected onto three large mattress pads and was installed in the shelter room of the Adama Center in Sderot.
The project was first exhibited in the end-of-year exhibition as part of the Culture, Creation, and Production studies at Sapir College.
