Bending — A Community Project in Mefalsim

Bending — A Community Project in Mefalsim
The project “Bending” began from a connection formed during the Artist and Community seminar. As part of the seminar, a group of art students and I conducted a mapping of public art initiatives in the Gaza Envelope region. During our visit to Kibbutz Mefalsim, I met Analia, a cultural entrepreneur who founded a placemaking project in the kibbutz – the Fairy Forest, named after her daughter Ella, who passed away at a young age. The forest had previously served as a space for youth and seniors and became a focal point for community activities. With the outbreak of the Iron Swords War in 2023 and the evacuation of the kibbutz to central Israel, the forest was abandoned and left desolate. Even after the community returned to the kibbutz, the process of readjustment was difficult, and the forest remained inactive.
Together with Analia, I created a series of encounters with the community, aiming to revive the forest — not only as a physical space, but as a hub for cultural and communal activity.
The first activity consisted of workshops for building wooden birdhouses, which were later hung in the forest. Through the act of building, a conversation emerged about home and migration, and about personal feelings regarding the meaning of “home.” Community members translated the discussion into action, decorating their birdhouses in relation to these emotions and stories.
In the second activity, I created a sculpture for the community that embodied the insights that emerged from the meetings. In this sculpture I experimented for the first time with bending wood — a physical process that connected to my previous works dealing with softening. By softening the wood with water and heat, it could be bent into a new shape. This action became a metaphor for communal flexibility: the ability to face difficulty and challenge, not to break, but to bend and transform.
The sculpture was embedded in the ground together with three climbing plants, symbolizing growth, renewal, and the community’s renewed connection to its home soil.
